Rule the Galaxy with the Ultimate Republic Starship
As seen in the film Star Wars: The Clone Wars — in which the heroic Jedi Knights try to restore peace to the Galaxy as more and more members of the Republic fall under the influence of the Dark Side — the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser provides an action-packed narrative setting to inspire imaginative play.
Every detail of the Republic flagship is packed into this 20-inch-long model, which includes a front panel that opens to reveal Palpatine’s quarters, a hidden cannon under the wings, a drop-bomb launcher, an escape pod, and more. The Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser comes complete with five mini figures: Chancellor Palpatine, two of his elite Senate bodyguards, one Clone Trooper pilot, and one Clone Trooper gunner.
Building the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser
With 1,170 pieces and two colorful instruction booklets, the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser took our two adult testers approximately three-and-a-half hours to construct. The majority of the pieces come in shades of gray, so approaching construction requires a bit or organization and discipline. But once building is started, detailed step-by-step illustrations make assembly straightforward.
Overall, this set scores an excellent rating for its clever design elements. Just when you think you’ve discovered all the hidden weapons and command posts, you stumble across another. Our favorite features are the Palpatine mini figure — complete with cloth cape and wrinkled brow — the sliding gunner, the hidden Clone Trooper cockpit, the escape pod, the bomb dropper, and the Chancellor’s enormous command center.
Finally, most of all, our testers enjoyed the way the narrative of this set allowed them to reenact the ship-to-ship combat seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They also appreciated that the storyline is simple enough to make the set entertaining, whether or not your child has seen the film.
What’s in the Box
1,170 LEGO pieces and two instruction booklets.
My 9 yr old son is very much into Star Wars Legos right now and saved up earnings to buy this. Like all legos, how durable can it really be? While he put it together, I found I had to go back and fix/correct a couple things because it effected the overall sturdiness and he wasn’t precise when originally putting it together. And as his lego stuff is all over his room (and you can’t fold it up and put it away easily)it does get knocked a bit and inadvertently stepped on by his younger brother. So we have to backtrack and fix. It’s educational in the sense that he uses his imagination when he’s got all his lego stuff out.

My son asked for this weeks before his 11th birthday and was really excited to get it. He and his brothers spend a lot of time building and playing with it and then later he tore it down and built it all again.

My son is 10 years old, really enjoying building the set. It is less challenging than I thought, but a good hand-on exercise. Some structure is not sturdy enough. Overall, my son is happy with the set.
Rating: 4 / 5
My son has built many LEGOS of all types: Star Wars, Space Police, Pirates, Castles, etc. This LEGO was not any harder or more complicated than any other but it simply wouldn’t stay together. Pieces were constantly falling off. Don’t see any reason for this — it’s not larger than others he has built. Very disappointed — especially for the price.

This isn’t a slam against Lego as a toy company, but this product is NOT one of their best engineered designs.
It is cool, no doubt. It is huge. It’s got the “wow” factor. But a lot of the kids who will play with this one are under the “9-14″ age bracket on the box and will play hard. This LEGO just doesn’t stay together like others do.
I put this together with my son and while it took a full 30 minutes just to sort the pieces by color and probably 4 hours of total building time, he was very excited to start role playing. I was impressed initially at how it was designed and at all the neat little extras (bomb compartment, sliding gun bay, escape pod, etc.).
But it is the playing is the problem. LEGO thoughtfully designed in a handle for lifting/flying the craft. But therein lies a problem. The connecting of the floor of the ship to the superstructure isn’t strong enough and several times a day the bottom literally drops out. First time he picked it up and did a sweeping “fly by” with it the whole bottom detached and flew off! This happened even with light playing later that day and following days.
Even with our own additions to strengthen it won’t keep it from bottoming out. Some other pieces come off real easily during play, but that’s typical for Lego’s and they go right back on. But the top and bottom separating requires several minutes of re-aligning and re-attaching.
In my mind, for the high price tag (luckily I saved about $40 with holiday deals) the craft should stay together a lot more solidly for “play time” with kids.
One star for “durability” (yes, Lego’s are unbreakable, but the vehicle often comes apart). The 9+ year olds won’t play at the same physicality as younger kids, but this Lego is way too cool for the 8 and under crowd to skip (this was all my 6 year old wanted!).
